That portal has temporarily been "modified" by the wizards tp get you to the temple. Do not return to the Archmage quest giver before completing the quest or you will never be able to complete it! The portal "collapses" if you do and the quest giver becomes very angry with you and kicks you out of his office permanently. NOTE: THe temple in quesiton is actually a modification of the NWC dungeon (or the "Temple in a Bottle" in the original game). It will come into play again later in the game in a "main Line" quest.
