The spell only works if

    Am I right in saying that when you cast the spell you get the message "Club" across the part of the in-game screen where you usually get your feedbacK?

    With some items "of dark magic" and level 10 GM in the skill, you will be able to reanimate most creatures. I think only titans and dragons need more levels after 10 in order to make their reanimation possible.
