There's a bad bug connected with the lich jars and soul jars. If you complete the soul jar quest before you do the quest to get your sorcerer promoted to lich, the lich jars you need for the promo quest will not be there. If you patch your game before you do the lich jar and soul jar quests, you should be all right. However, patching won't help you if you've done these quests before patching the game. The only solution then is to use an editor to edit in the jars - and make sure you get the right jars when you do this. You need empty lich jars (you get the full ones when your sorcerer gets promoted), and IIRC every character needs one in his/her inventory, whether he/she is actually going to be made a lich or not.
