I don't use the banks in MM7 or MM8

    You receive a quest to sink the Regnan pirate fleet. When you do this, the pirates sack Ravenshore, the main city, and the first place they hit is - yes, you've guessed it - the bank. So if you have any money in there when that happens, you lose it.
