ooops... For an easy-to-use editor try the MM7CHE.

It's probably the best for editing save-game files. I don't know where it's located offhand but MM7CHE (.exe) is the name of it.

This program makes it real simple to add whatever you like to your characters. However, be sure the character you select has enough space in their backpack for the key or you'll run into trouble. I think the Key is 1x2 squares large, but it might be 2x2. Here's how to do it:

    1) Run MM7CHE.

    2) Select appropriate saved game file.

    3) In the lower right window, highlight any character you like.

    4) Click "Edit Character"

    5) In the new window, there are tabs across the top. Select the "Inventory" tab.

    6) To the right is a scrollbox that says "Item". Click the box and a huge list appears. The Key you are seeking is about 7/8ths into the list, near the end. (There are TWO items called ALTAR PIECE. Offhand I do not know which one is which, so you'll have to experiment. Might as well add them both; they're easily deleted.)

    7) Highlight "ALTAR PIECE" and click "Add Item".

    8) Click "OK". (If you want to make special items, use the other boxes and be sure to hit "Apply" first). This returns you to the main party screen.

    9) Click "OK" on the main party screen. It is equivalent to "Save". If you click "cancel" the keys won't be there.

    10) Load your game. The character you edited should have the key. Eureka!

(If you added both keys since they cannot be discerned in the editor, give the key you don't want to someone else, reload the editor, load that character, highlight ALTAR PIECE in the LEFT-SIDE inventory box, click "Delete Item", click "OK", click "OK" again, and return to your game. It's just as if you opened the chest normally, minus its other random treasures.)
