You really need GM Protection from Magic for it. Preservation allows the unconscious character not to die no matter how low is his HP. Normally, you will die if your END + HP becomes negative. Preservation removes this condition, you can have HP -600 and you are still alive, you can still be healed and, if you have the Regeneration spell active, you are regenerating.
Preservation protects from strong normal attacks and especially from "area effect" attacks like Meteor Shower. Note that Meteor Showers and similar spells will hit your unconscious characters, too, so that they can die quickly.
Nevertheless, the "instant death" attacks continue being instant death attacks. The spell does not protect from Blood Titans, Tolberti, Greater Wyverns, Minotaur Kings and similar creatures.
