If you take a sorceror along and
want to clear the world in 5-6 months -
then you better choose Unarmed. If you want to play a 3-4 year game
and never hurry, make Staff 10 GM, and develop Unarmed and Armsmaster (for example upping 2 Unarmed levels each time you up 1 Armsmaster level).
There's a third way -
i.e. gather and hide away horsehoes and develop Unarmed-only past level 15 until you find or enchant a really quick Staff (of Darkness, of Recovery etc.) and high Armsmaster (over +10) items, relicts, or artefacts.
then in October week 4 feed your monk all horseshoes, and get Staff GM 10, and Armsmaster M10-15.
