Both games are subject to what I call the "chest arrangement" bug. The game decides what goes into a chest and in what order it's going to place them into it (i.e. what goes in first, second, etc.). That is set when your party first enters and area or dungeon, and it does not change. However, the placement of the items in the chest is random each time you open the chest. If the last item to be placed is large (such as a suit of armour), the game will have calculated the amount of space it needs, but there is no assurance that the space remaining is the right shape. If it's the wrong shape, the item will not be placed. This is the bug that sometimes causes the shield "Eclipse" to go missing in MM8.
