Save often, and if you don't like the result, reload. I remember playing "Crusaders of the Dark Savant", and learning the hard way that in the early stages of the game, you saved your position every time you went through a door — every time without exception. I don't think my hard drive got much peace in that game.I'm a great believer in multilooting and aggressive reloading. I don't know if you ever played Might & Magic 3, but I'll never forget the time I was processing on of the hoards in the Dragon Caves and up popped an Acidic Obsidian Longsword. It was the best weapon I ever got in that game.
