These two can only be obtained by random chance

Each artifact or relic (a/r) can be obtained once, and once only, by random chance. The easiest way to get specific ones is to kill a high-level monster, usually a Dragon (of any colour), a Great Wyrm, or a Supreme Titan, and save your position before you loot the cadaver. If you don't like what you get, reload the position and try again. Occasionally, the cadaver will not vanish when you loot it. In that case, you can save that position to get the benefit of the treasure, and loot the carcass again.

There are additional copies of five of the artifacts which can be found in specific places. Excalibur, appropriately enough, can be found stuck in a rock on an island in Eel-Infested Waters. Mordred (dagger) can be obtained by completing a quest, given by somebody in Free Haven, I think – I can't remember exactly who off-hand. The other three, Morgan (amulet) and the rings Guinevere and Igraine are in the obelisk treasure – and I won't spoil by telling you exactly how to get that!

There is, however, a catch. You can get up to 13, and only 13, a/r by random chance, and once you've got these, the 5 placed artifacts are still there to be found so that you can get a maximum of 18. However, if you find and take any of the placed artifacts before you've found the permitted 13 a/r by random chance, the one you find counts against your allocation, so that the maximum you can get drops to 17. So, depending on when you find and take the placed artifacts, you can end up with anything between 13 & 18 a/r.

Also, you cannot cheat the system by taking an artifact and selling it or throwing it away to restore the count. Once you've taken an artifact and saved your position, that's it, the total of a/r you can still find has irrevocably dropped by one.

If you have Fly, Meteor Shower, and Starburst, none of the high-tariff monsters are difficult to kill in the open. Basically, you fly, staying near the ground, and bomb them from a safe distance in turn-based mode, jinking up and down to avoid their ranged attacks. If they get too close, run away to open the range to a safe distance before resuming. Just in case you didn't know . . .

    HTH!
