The only way of avoiding the ooze is to jump over it.

    Besides, IMO it's not worth avoiding them. They don't do much damage, and in some places (not here) I seem to remember that there are goodies in them. There are other similar obstacles (e.g. fires) in some places, and it's always worth while testing them once.
