There are specific reasons for visiting each and every map. Take a look at the lower right side of your screen. You will see a set of icons where the obelisk (and others) used to be.

As you progress through the various maps, each one contains one (or more) places to visit that will add to each one of the icons and will provide specific clues on how to reach the end and grab the corrupted chalice (which you must destroy - this is you one and only quest . . . the others are aids to get you there).

In some cases, you must completely finish talking to the specific clue givers to be able to progress as there are critical teleporters that will be unavailable until you do.

You must first touch the stone of understanding (which was introduced to you by the four fountains in the beginning). Their clues will help you in that sub-quest, Unless you touch that stone, you will be unable to understand anything said by the other clue givers.

BDJ has asked me not to be too specific in giving out spoilers, but general hints are OK. If you need help, I can provide it to a limited degree.

As a helper clue, after touching the Stone of Understanding, talk to the boss Lennie (the rock with a flame) in the very first map.
