Might and Magic® VII FAQ - The most Frequently Asked Questions about this title.

Additions to the Manual

(6/22/99): The manual states that there are low, medium, and high options for the video display quality.   These options were taken out of the game after the manual had already been completed.

(6/22/99): The manual incorrectly states that the Ranger begins with the ability to cast spells.   In order for a Ranger to get magic, he/she must first complete the Hunter Quest.

(6/22/99): The manual incorrectly states that the archer begins with the potential to become an expert at disarm traps.   The archer does not gain the expert in disarm traps potential until achieving either the master archer or sniper promotion.

New Features

These additional features were added after the manual was completed:

The Current Quest, Notes and History books will flash as they get added to and updated.   The book will stop flashing once accessed.

You can right click on the Mini-map (upper right corner) or the player map (M key) in outdoor areas to get the name of the building that the mouse cursor is over.

Right clicking on skills in the character screen will show which
skills the character can learn at his current promotion (white), skills
he/she could potentially learn at a following promotion (yellow), and skills
they will never be able to learn (red).   It will also show the total bonus
to the skill gained from NPCs and items.

Protection from Magic (master level body spell) also protects against
the eradication condition at grandmaster expertise.

Training takes one week per level per visit, to a maximum of the number of times any one single character trains.

If you toggle the colored lights option (Video Options: hardware only) on or off, you will need to exit and restart the game in order for the change to take effect.

The gamma setting can be changed in the Video Options submenu under the Controls option in the Options menu (Esc key).   Note: You must be in full screen mode to adjust the gamma setting.

To toggle the game between full screen and windowed mode, push the F4 key.

You can pause Might and Magic VII by pressing the Escape key to bring up the options menu, or by pressing the Enter key to activate turn-based mode.

Keyboard Remapping:

When remapping the Might and Magic VII commands, you will not be able to map new functions to the following keys: numeric keys, Esc, function keys, Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause/Break, Shift, Alt, or Caps Lock. The only remappable keys available on the numeric keypad are the Add(+), Subtract (-), and Enter keys.

The H key cannot be reassigned; it will always bring up the History
Book.

Might and Magic® VII FAQ

Problem (10/02/01): When I click on the entrance to either The Pit or Celeste, there is no response.

Answer: You haven't made the choice of which path your party will follow- Light or Dark. These locations are only accessible to those who have declared their allegiance. You're just not ready yet.

Problem (5/23/00): I made it through the Walls of Mist (Light Path Proving Grounds), but my Wizard or Priest can't learn the Light Magic skill. What's up?

Answer: Please refer to Page 14 of the game manual. You'll find out why there.

Problem (5/23/00): I looked in the chest indicated in the Prima(R) Strategy Guide for the Golem's Chest, and it's not there. Where is it?

Answer: This is one of the very few spots where Prima got it wrong. To find the chest, you'll need to travel to the location indicated in the Prima Guide. From there, take the southwest bridge to the next mesa to find the chest with the Golem's Chest inside. The correct directions are given on the 3DO 900 Hint Line (1-900-CALL3DO).

Problem (5/23/00): I went to exactly to where the Prima Strategy Guide said to go for the Evenmorn Island map in the Tidewater Caverns, and it's not there. Where is it?

Answer: Unfortunately, the Prima Guide is a bit misleading on this issue. The map exists, close to where the Guide indicates, but not exactly in the same spot indicated. The 3DO 900 Hint Line (1-900-CALL3DO) gives exact (correct) directions to where the map is. Most of the Prima Guide is correct.

Problem (5/23/00): When I returned the Evenmorn Island map for the Priest promotion, the instructor kept the map. How am I going to get to Evenmorn Island now?

Answer: While you weren't handed back the physical map, your party knows the way to Evenmorn Island now. Certain ships will travel there on certain days at this point.

Problem (7/8/99): I have successfully installed Might and Magic VII.   When I try to run the game, it keeps asking me for disk 2.   How do I fix this?

Answer: Some systems have the Disconnect box checked in their CD-ROM options. This is an option for SCSI CD-ROMs, and apparently can cause some problems with IDE CD-ROMS.   If they've got an IDE drive, uncheck this box, and the second disk should run fine.

  1. Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties."   This will open the "System Properties" window.
  2. Click on the "Device Manager" tab.
  3. Click on the plus symbol next to CD-ROM.
  4. Double click on the CD-ROM listed on the second branch.
  5. Click on the "Settings" tab.
  6. Uncheck the Disconnect box.
  7. Click "OK."
  8. Click "OK."
  9. Restart your computer.
  10. Also, make sure that you're using Disk 2, the Play Disk. It's located on the underside of the black partition-divider in the CD jewelcase.

Problem (7/8/99): I have all the keys necessary to get past the Wall of Mists but the pillars will not accept them.   I have tried everything, how do I get the Wall of Mists to Open?

Answer: In order to get the wall to open, you need to have the appropriate key in the active character's inventory when you click on the button at the top of each pillar (for each of the three pillars/keys).   It’s easiest if you give all the keys to one character.   If the mouse click doesn't register, try pressing the spacebar.   If that doesn't work, shift your party's position (the East pillar seems to prefer that the party stand just to the left of center, for example).

Problem (6/22/99): I have an Nvidia Riva 128 based video card and cannot see the monsters or NPCs in the game.   How do I fix this?

Answer: We recommend using the Riva 128 Detonator drivers for these cards.   You can download them at http://www.nvidia.com/. Some cards may require the game to be run in Software 3D mode.   You can do this by running the Might and Magic VII Configuration Utility from the Start\Programs\3DO\Might and Magic VII menu.

Problem (6/22/99): I found a wand and tried to recharge it.   Now I can't move anything in my character's inventory and/or some items are duplicated.   What might have caused this?

Answer: If you find a wand with no charges listed, DO NOT RECHARGE IT.   Doing this can cause errors within the game.   If you have done this please go to a previously saved game or AutoSave from before you recharged the wand. The 1.1 patch for the game should fix this problem.

Problem (6/14/99): I have a Voodoo 2 video card and MM7 is constantly locking up on me or sending me back to desktop.   How do I fix this?

Answer: For Voodoo based cards, we recommend using the  latest 3dfx reference drivers for best gameplay.   You can download the reference drivers from http://www.3dfx.com/.

Problem (6/14/99): When I launch the game, I receive the error, "Direct Draw Error DDERR_UNSUPPORTED in file D:\MM7\MM7\Code\Screen16.cpp at line number: 2669" and the game goes not run.   How can I get the game to work with my Voodoo Rush/ATi/Intel i810/Trident card?

Answer: You can download a program that will automatically fix this problem by clicking here.

Or you can do it manually by following the steps listed below to correct the problem:

  1. Click on the "Start" button, choose "Run", then type in the following command: "Regedit." Then click on "OK."
  2. Go to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\New World Computing\Might and Magic VII\1.0" folder.
  3. Double-click on the "2dacceloff" setting (second from the top).
  4. Change the Value Data setting to "1," then click "OK."
  5. Exit the Registry Editor and start the game.

Problem (6/10/99): I have a Voodoo 3 card, and when I run the game in windowed mode, the water doesn't look right.   Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Answer: The Voodoo 3(TM) does not correctly display the water tiles' mipmaps in windowed mode.

Solution: Press the F4 key to switch the game to full screen mode.   This should fix the problem.

Problem (6/10/99): After I Alt-Tab out of MM7 and then Alt-Tab back into the game, the screen flickers.   How do I fix this?

Solution: This can be corrected by switching to windowed mode (F4 key) and then switching back to full screen (F4 key).

Problem (6/10/99):  I have a DVD player in my computer.   When I play MM7, I experience some graphic glitches. Why does this happen and how do I fix it?

Answer: This is usually caused by  some incompatibility between your video card drivers  and or DVD decoder card drivers.

Solution: Download the newest drivers for your DVD decoder card and or video card from the manufacture's site.
