Might and Magic VI FAQProblem (11/17/98): I have heard that there will be a 3dfx patch for Might and Magic VI. Is this true? Answer: No, there will not be a 3dfx patch for Might and Magic VI. Solution: Might and Magic VII will take advantage of 3D acceleration. Problem (11/17/98): I want to change my party order. Can this be done? Answer: Yes, it is possible to change your party order. This is an undocumented feature. Solution: Click on the portrait of the character that you want move so that it is highlighted. Move the mouse cursor over the portrait of the character that you want the other character to switch places with. Hold down the Ctrl key and left click on the character portrait. The two characters should switch places. Note: This will only work if you are on the main game screen, not on the inventory or statistic screen. Problem (11/17/98): One of my characters has been turned to stone. When I try to have one of my other characters use a Stone to Flesh scroll, that character just casts the spell on them self. How can I get my character to use the scroll on the stoned character? Answer: Whenever you have a character use a Stone to Flesh scroll from the main game screen, they will always cast the spell on them self. Solution: Select the character that you want to have cast the spell, and open their inventory screen. Put the mouse cursor over the Stone to Flesh scroll and left click to pick it up. Drag the scroll to the right, so that it is overlaying the characters "paper doll" graphic, then left click to have that character use the scroll. The mouse cursor will be replaced with an aiming crosshairs. Move the crosshairs to the portrait of the stoned character, then left click again to cast the spell on that character. Note: You should use the same procedure to use a Raise Dead scroll on a deceased character. Problem (11/17/98): My game used to play in full screen mode, but now it plays in a window, and the maximize button is grayed out. How can I play in full screen mode again? Answer: Sometimes, installing the patch or changing the video settings on your system can cause the game to switch to windowed mode. Solution: Push the F4 key to switch between windowed mode and full screen mode. Problem (11/17/98): I have recovered the Hourglass of Time, but Lord Newton does not acknowledge the fact that my party has it in their possession. How do I get Lord Newton to see the Hourglass? Answer: This problem only occurs if you have installed the 1.1 patch for the game. Installing this patch permanently unlocks the door to Gharik's Forge, which was done to fix a problem involving the key to that door disappearing after only a single use. However, if you install the patch early on in the game, you will never need to use the key at all, therefore it never disappears. As long as one of the members of your party are carrying the key to Gharik's Forge, Lord Newton will not be able to see that you are carrying the Hourglass of Time. Solution: Drop the key to Gharik's Forge, then try talking to Lord Newton again. Problem (11/17/98): I cast the Fly spell and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Answer: Casting the Fly spell temporarily gives your party the ability to fly, but simply casting the spell does not direct your flight. Solution: The rest of this answer is edited out due to TELP rule on not supporting piracy. Our answer is simply: Look in the manual. Problem (11/17/98): I have the Cloak of Baa, but I still can't enter the inner Temple of Baa, and I take damage whenever I try to go through the doors. Why? Answer: The door is protected by a powerful trap. Solution: One of your characters must be a Master of the Perception skill in order to disarm this particular trap. Problem (11/17/98): When starting up Might and Magic 6, the program crashes and you get an "Invalid Page Fault" error message. Answer: We've identified a problem running Might and Magic VI on PC's that have older versions of the Cyrix 686 chip. Older Cyrix chips do not have the code that identifies them as Pentium-compatible processors. As a result, Might and Magic VI can't identify your processor as a Pentium processor, and it crashes upon launch. To identify whether your machine has one of these older Cyrix processors, do the following:
[Note: "dxinfo.exe" is also available on the Might and Magic VI Install disc, within the "_Setup\DirectX" folder.] Solution: This problem was fixed in the 1.1 patch. You can get this patch by using Might and Magic VI's built in game update feature. To do this, click on the Windows "Start" button, choose "Programs," then choose "Might and Magic VI," then click on "Game Update." Alternately, you can download and install the 1.1 patch manually. Problem (5/27/98): Sometimes when I go into battle I get an error that says "Assertion Error in Party.CPP." Answer: The assertion Error in Party.CPP is due to having Boosted Characters Stats. The Stats are usually boosted by casting Party/Character Protection Spells and having values like 400+ in stats and 60k+ in HP/SP or any combination of the two. Solution: We recommend that you REST to remove these boosted values and you will not get this assertion error. Also if you go into Turn-Based mode you should not get this error. Turn-Based follows a different code path so it does not have this problem. Problem (5/21/98): Experiencing random crashes to the Windows desktop during gameplay. Answer: Might and Magic VI is a very robust and intense game that requires a large amount of system resources. Running the game on a limited amount of resources may cause crashes to the desktop. Step #1: Eliminate all unnecessary programs running in the background by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del. This will bring up the Close Program dialog box. You can shut down programs that you don't need to have running by clicking on the program you want to close and then pressing the "End Task" button. We have found that programs such as virus scanners (e.g., Vshield32) and Findfast consume a lot of memory resources, and by shutting them down you can get improved game performance and stability. Important: Do not shut down Explorer or Systray. These are required by Windows for it to operate properly. Step #2: Update your sound and video drivers to the most current versions. You can do so by clicking on the Driver Updates link on the left-hand side of this page and following the detailed instructions there. Step #3: If crashing problems persist try running the game in windowed mode by pressing F4. Games tend to be more stable under windowed mode. Note: Your display must be set to 16-bit High Color mode to do this - check the Display control panel, and click on the Settings tab to see whether or not you are running in 16-bit High Color mode). You can toggle back to non-windowed mode by pressing F4 again. 5/1/98 Question: Why do I get a gray/white screen when I try to launch the game? Answer: This could be due to your video and or sound drivers not being DirectX compatible. Solution: Please refer to the troubleshooting section of this support web site to learn how to certify your hardware drivers for DirectX. 5/1/98 Question: When I try to play the game it wont recognize my disc 2. Why? Answer: If you are running a program in the background that automatically recognizes a CD as an audio CD(like FlexiCD® by Microsoft©) you may experience this problem. Solution: Disable the program by turning it off or going to the options menu within your program.
4/29/98 Question: In the heat of battle I try to save my game. Suddenly the game window minimizes and I'm sent to the Windows desktop. Why? Answer: If you are fighting and using the Alt and/or Shift buttons and press the Esc key to save, this may send you to the desktop. Solution: Try saving the game often and before you enter a new room or map where
you feel you may encounter trouble. Also limit the number of keys you press at the same
time.
