Verhoffin Ruins door remains locked w/ Capstone

I have the Capstone of Order, and was told to head to Verhoffin to place it. When I get there, the door is still locked. If I stand on the pentagram all of the fires light up, but the door remains locked. I have the original game, but was running the GOG version since it was all patched up.

None of the walkthroughs say anything but "open the door, walk up the stairs and place the capstone". I tried deleting minisaves and that didn't work. I copied my saves, uninstalled the game, and installed the game from the original CDs without patching. The door remained locked.

Am I missing something? I can't find anything on-line about this issue.

That was the nudge I needed. I had the colors written down in my notes, but I originally did the dungeon WAY earlier in the game and forgot about them.

Really enjoying the game this time around. I haven't played it since it first came out, and I guess my expectations were low. It's a lot more fun than I remembered.

I still think that in terms of the quality of the plot, the puzzles, and the gameplay, Might & Magic III beats them all.

The only game outside the M&M series that I rated as highly was Eye of the Beholder 2 – the Legend of Darkmoon. Although a superb game, its weakness was that the pleasure of replaying it fell quite sharply, because you always found exactly the same weapons, armour, and other items in exactly the same places in every game.

In contrast, I'll never forget the time when the random generator in MM3 presented me with an acidic obsidian longsword. Weapons like that were as scarce as hens' teeth. If you mephistoed one of the high-tariff treasures such as the treasure piles in the depths of Dragon Cavern, you might get one in a full afternoon's work. But I wouldn't guarantee it.

And, for those of you who don't own M&M III, it can be played online...

Dammit! I just finished MMX. Didn't know about this - now I'm hooked on another game!

Try and play it if you can - it's a belter of a game

And after you've played it, get back to me, and I'll show you how to play it to maximum advantage. I'm not going to do so now, because it involves spoilers.

For example, you are going to need a thief for your first run-through. However, there is a way of doing without one which gives you a much more flexible party. Especially, there are four chairs which, if used properly, give your party a huge advantage, but if used improperly, will either cripple or kill your characters.

Just finished the playthrough of MMX, can't really commit to starting another long game now - especially a new game (for me). But now that I know it's playable, I'm sure it will happen before too long!

the controls just seem too difficult to have fun, or at least they're beyond my patience to work out. I've entered the Tavern near the start, but I can't even select either the thumbs up or thumbs down icon. I also can't select any of the icons on the main screen, such as the bow & arrow. Looks like this one is a bust

I've got so used to the game, that I find it easier and faster to use the keyboard controls

If it helps, the keyboard commands are:

    S — — — — Shoot (Bow & arrow)
    C — — — — Cast a spell (Diamond surrounded by dots)
    R — — — — Rest (Tent with ZZ's)
    B — — — — Bash (Boot - kick down doors etc.)
    D — — — — Dismiss (Shield with X - return a character to the Inn)
    V — — — — View quests and notes (Unrolled scroll)
M — — — — Automap (Stylised map - only operates if at least 1 character has the Cartography skill)
    I — — — — Information (Hourglass - time, date, active spells)
    Q — — — — Quick reference (Party summary sheet)
Tab — — — Control panel (access to save, load, quit, and game options)
Arrow keys to move. Taking the Number Lock off and using the arrows on the keypad gives you extra options.
F1 to F8 select different characters

    Combat options
F — — — — Quick fight (Crossed swords - automatic fight using whatever combat options are set for each character)
O — — — — Set quick fight Options (Two upright swords - options are Attack, Cast, Block, or Run)
    C — — — — Cast (as above)
A — — — — Attack (Man pierced by sword - shoots at range, otherwise attacks with whatever weapon is equipped)
U — — — — Use (Phial of liquid - allows character to change equipment or use an item's special properties)
R — — — — Run (Man running - try and escape to safe location)
B — — — — Block (Man with shield - attempts to block next attack)

I'll try it, but........

    Ossie writes:

the link is to an emulation of a game box version (SNES?), not a PC version. So there aren't keyboard controls as such, the various buttons on a game controller are mapped to the keyboard. So each of those commands have to be manually selected by the icon, rather than a quick key. In addition to taking at least three times as long to do anything in the first place (whatever key gets you onto icon panel, direction keys to select icon, whatever key triggers the icon), for the life of me I can't work out how to even get onto the icon panel. I can walk around with the direction keys, but I can't interact with anything.

If I had more patience I'd sit down and work it all out - if I ever do, it will only be on the strength of your continued recommendation that it's worth it!

Besides, if it's too difficult to play, that will kill your enjoyment very quickly, no matter how good it is.

I feel it's worth a try. But this particular link, I don't think will be enjoyable. A 3-step process to perform any command in the game just seems too aggravating.

Maybe I should try to find a PC version that will work on my Windows 7 machine - I think all of 1-5 were on the Millenium version of 6 that I have lying around somewhere - but I never bothered looking for them, let alone loading them......

The three compilation sets that I know are:

    MM6 Platinum edition — contains MM6-9
MM6 Millennium edition — contains MM6-8 plus World of Xeen (MM4-5) and Swords of Xeen (the fan-designed (fan-made?) game that New World Computing judged good enough to publish)
MM6 Limited edition — contains MM1-6 plus Swords of Xeen

The MM6 version in the first two is v1.2, which means you'll have to apply either Mok's patch or Greyface's patch for it to play properly.

The MM6 Limited edition (which is the one I have) contains the v1.0 game. This has its flaws, but I find it perfectly playable as long as you are aware of the Gharik's Lab door bug, and how to play the game in a way that avoids it.

The versions of MM1-5 are, so far as I know, all the latest versions of the games, and I've not found any bugs in the ones I've played. However, the Swords of Xeen in MM6LE is still bugged, and I have never been able to complete the last dungeon in it, although I found a site once that showed a speeded-up playthrough of it.

Given there's a link to *a* version of the game, I'm assuming it's freeware now so hopefully there's a link to a PC version somewhere that will work with Windows 7, when I get around to looking. I've decided I want to play it, but I've also decided I'm not going to bother with the emulation in the link above

I used to be able to run MM3-5 in the DOS shell of my older old computer, but when that one bit the dust, the remaining one had less lower memory — enough to run MM3, but not MM4-5. I haven't been able to play MM4-5 for many years now, and I wouldn't mind having another go at them.
