Might & Magic X Legacy

Do any of you have any thoughts on the upcoming game from Ubisoft.
It will be 1st person party based which is unheard of nowadays.

Aside from the official trailer i found this off screen footage yesterday:

I don't think it would feel too much like classic M&M from watching this, and the monsters seem to hang around waiting to be hit.
Still it's early days yet, and maybe the finished product will be worth playing.

Thank you very much for that

I actually think it looks promising! If they put as much effort into the plot and puzzle design as they seem to have put into the graphics, it could be a good game. We'll have to wait and see.

It's not looking great to me.

Honestly, I'm thinking the same thing as you. It does not look like the Might and Magic series we want. The portraits for the party of not appealing and the inventory system looks a lot like every other adventure/rpg game. I'm going to play it, but I am not hopeful.

I have doubts too.

I believe only a team of fans doing a project for free can give us what we want.
Game Companies always feel that they have to do things in certain way in order to have a market, and don't want to take risks.
A team of fans working for free can afford to ignore what seems popular in the general gaming world, but Ubisoft can't.

I will wait to hear what others say before buying it

Apart from Swords of Xeen, the only fan-created games that ever really worked were mods

Ribannah tried to organise the creation of the Might & Magic Tribute game, but the programmers seemed to arrive and then drift away with the work half done. I keep checking every few days, but there haven't been any posts on the MMT board for months now.

I don't know if this is helpful at all or anything interesting, because I know next to nothing about making a game, but check this out and maybe let me know what you think.

I think if I gave you any advice on this, it would be a case of the blind leading the blind

I've not done any game programming since the days of the Oric and the Sinclair Spectrum. I wrote a couple of my own games (text-only adventure games) then, but home computing advanced so fast that I couldn't keep up with it and hold down a job at the same time.

It was rather odd, actually. I remember having a look at the code for one of the games a year after I wrote it, and there were some parts I just didn't understand any more. I still knew that I'd kept it as tight as I could and tried to avoid inherently slow operations, and the game worked and ran fast, but I'd completely lost some of the reasons for writing some of the routines in the way that I'd done. Probably the fact that I'd only written scratchpad programs during the year had more then a little to do with it.

I am definitely going to wait and see game play for myself. Reviews too, but they are not always reliable and you cannot return the game!

Have you guys heard of the game Skyrim? According to reviews, this is supposed to be the best rpg ever. 10/10 they say. I would rate Skyrim 4/10 and I do mean that honestly. Trust me, I am a might and magic disciple! It could have been so cool though and there are similarities to M&M with this game.

Somewhat sceptical, but pleased nonetheless

Not really a fan of the new setting for the M&M universe and especially more so since the last heroes installment.
That being said, the game looks sort of interesting. The playable world, they've claimed, will be larger than that of Xeen. Though cramed into some randomly concocted peninsula more or less the size of a duchy, rather than a whole world. Hopefully this will allow the writing to be separated from, and less influenced by, the current Heroes series.

The class system seems hit-or-miss, skills and leveling is an unknown to me but judging from the video it seems pretty dull (where's the training?). Combat seems to follow old-school M&M mechanics which should work nicely, I just hope they change thoose damage splashes into something less ugly.

Things I hope they include is exploration enhancing measures such as mountaneering and foresting (thoose trees, can you enter them?), mobility spells (levitation, teleport) and, of course, hilariously animated portraits (I'm diseased, I'm green and my cheeks have expanded).

They are going to release modding tools.

Celestial heavens interview in April asked the question and got this answer.

CH: M&M fans love modding. Will this be possible? What can you tell us about it?
Answer: Alright, about modding: We plan to release an editor for Might & Magic X. On top modders will get access to almost everything in the game from level building, adding objects, changing textures, adding monsters, modifying values, creating texts, etc.
Will it be super easy? No. Why? It's a tool, it takes time and it takes dedication. It's 90% the same tools we are using to create the game right now. We are optimizing to make it as accessible as we can but it's not a "one-button-create-fun" solution. Nevertheless, we are confident that we will see user created content for Legacy. We'll talk about and introduce to you this particular topic in more details later during the development.

In fact all these interviews look promising in many ways:

will have you needing to train with trainers to level up your skills, but levelling up will be automatic, combat is much like MM6 in turnbase mode (i got the VIP demo so i know abit more.) and those...splashes are placeholders AFAIK.

animated faces and alot of stuff from the older MM's are in (thanks to alot of bickering by the sleeper MM agents on the VIP team LOL)and there will be stuff to find around int he world to make exploring worthwhile.
