...Guild Wars 2 will be releasing a version for the Mac in the near future. It's a great game, beautifully done, and shares the same sort of attitude that characterized the M7M series. It differs most notably in that it is an online game with a very social structure.

The game needs something or other like "active pixels." I downloaded what seemed to be a suitable program, but it refused to install, so that game's going on the back burner until I upgrade the system.

If forum were truly dead then it would be overflowing with spam. We clean it up 2-3 times a week. But I do understand your question, and there are good answers. Most of it has to do with the relationship between NWC (the studio) and 3DO (the publisher that owned them). The game was horribly rushed, but that just one aspect of a long answer. The short answer is that MM9 was never as popular as MM6-8, so it didn't develop the enduring fanbase. It would be possible to mod it, but that would be much more difficult than modding MM6-8 -- which has been done several times. But several folks still make daily visits here and are willing to discuss various aspects of the game, so do stick around.

The Might and Magic games (I don't include the Heroes if Might & Magic among them) were in my opinion some of the best single-player RPGs ever written, and a number of us still play them. The pre-windows games (MM1-MM5 and Swords of Xeen) are not all that easy to play these days, although one of them (MM3) was IMO one of the best-written RPGs ever from the point of view of plot, puzzles, and game design. MM6-8 were excellent games in their own right, and there are a number of good mods of these. Probably the best known of the mods are a couple written by a small team headed by Big Daddy Jim (BDJ). The mod of MM7 cures what I thought was a disadvantage of the original game, in which no party could learn both Light and Dark magics. The mod of MM6 is more far-reaching, and amounts to the creation of a new game in the same geographical layout. It's called The Chaos Conspiracy. As Bones says, MM9 was badly rushed. 3DO was rapidly going down the tubes and could not afford the resources to finish the game before the axe finally fell. TELP (notably Bones) did its best, but some of the flaws are built into the game engine, which is much more difficult to modify than scripting errors. It's a great shame - IMO it could have been one of the great MM games.

As you can see, we still get some discussions on our messageboards, and we do have a handful of folks who love these games and stick around to help others, but our community is much diminished from its heyday. Most of our social life (what there is of it) occurs in the MM6 Tavern. We mostly maintain these boards against the spammers as an open resource.Celestial Heavens (at the link below) has a much more vibrant M&M community, and although we'd love to have you stick around and join our group of old-timers -- maybe stir things up a bit -- you might find CH fits your needs better. Or not, but now you can decide. Cheers!
