It certainly appeared in MM3, and we worked out what it did there. 10/25/2008, 07:53:41

A number of things, all but one of them bad. 10/26/2008, 12:53:56

Peter2 writes:
The only thing it was good for was to raid one especial hut in the marshes north of Swamptown. The description was something like "... there is powerful treasure scattered on the floor." However when one of your characters not carrying the Fizbin tried to take it, he died instantly. With the Fizbin, the treasure could be taken, no problem. The one bad thing that I specifically remember, was that you could use things called "Quatloo coins" in a particular room in Slithercult Stronghold to boost your stats. They worked fine - as long as the character was not carrying a Fizbin. I can't remember now exactly what happened, but it wasn't good! There were other things, but it has been so long ago since I played the game that I cannot remember them, and I won't have access until I get some things in my setup sorted out.

Fizbin and Quatloo coins? 10/27/2008, 10:18:12
|
Christy writes:
Did everything else connected to the Fizbin of Malfortune have to do with that one Star Trek episode too? If so, it's likely that the Fizbin is connected to something from Star Trek (possibly that single episode) in MM9 too; it would make sense. So what other ST references exist inside MM9? It also occurs to me that whatever Fizbin is good for in MM9 could be one of those things not finished. For anyone who never watched Star Trek: These to items (Fizbin and Quatloo) were part of an episode where Kirk was enslaved and had to wear a slave collar; he was placed into a sort of reality TV show and the enemy bet on what he would do. Fizbin was a game he made up on the spot to confuse the enemy, and Quatloo coins were the currency the enemy used to bet on his actions. I have forgotten how he escaped (someone remind me; it might be important for what Fizbin does in MM9).

I was never a trekkie, but yes, there are StarTrek references in most if not all of the MM games I've played. 10/27/2008, 16:01:42

Not sure about MM8, though. Maybe it's there and I've not spotted it - like I say, I was never a Star Trek devotee. And thank you for the info about the Fizbin and the Quatloos. I didn't catch those as a ST reference, either.

Fizbin game from Star Trek - A Piece of the Action 10/28/2008, 06:03:56

DaveO writes:
This, uh, this card game is a kid's game.
You think so?
Oh, yes. I wouldn't waste my time.
Who's asking you?
On Beta Antares IV, they play a real game.
It's a man's game, but a little beyond you.
It requires intelligence.
Listen, Kirk,
I can play anything you can figure out.
Take the cards, big man.
Show us how it's played.
I'm familiar with the culture on Beta Antares.
There aren't games --
Spock. Spock.
Of course the cards on Beta Antares IV are different,
but not too different.
The name of the game is called, uh ...
fizzbin.
Fizzbin?
Fizzbin. It's, uh ... not too difficult.
Each player gets six cards,
except for the player
on the dealer's right, who gets seven.
On the right?
The second card is turned up, except on Tuesdays.
On Tuesday.
[Kirk] Mm-hmm.
Oh, look what you got, twojacks.
You got a half fizzbin already.
I need another jack.
No. If you got another jack,
why, you'd have a sralk.
A sralk?
Yes. You'd be disqualified.
You need a king and a deuce,
except at night, when you'd need a queen and a 4.
Except at night.
Right.
Oh, look at that.
You've got another jack!
Ha ha ha!
How lucky you are! How wonderful for you.
If you didn't get another jack,
if you'd gotten a king,
why, then, you'd get another card,
except when it's dark, you'd give it back.
If it were dark on Tuesday.
But what you're after is a royal fizzbin,
but the odds in getting a royal fizzbin are astron --
Spock, what are the odds in getting a royal fizzbin?
I've never computed them.
Well, they're astronomical, believe me.
Now, for the last card. We'll call it a kronk. At the kronk point the guy is belted by Kirk or incapacitated by Spock's nerve pinch.
