[FIX] Long wait times for inventory/map/menu screen etc 07/22/2008, 08:49:03
|
frognik writes:
Hey guys I stumbled upon this site trying to find a fix for the long wait times however I see you guys don't have a fix for it.Lucky for you I'm a programmer and specialize in debugging The problem is related to one of the procedures in cshell.dll
The procedure is actually quite useless so basically I made it so it skips it. Here is the cshell.dll that I've patched:
http://rapidshare.com/files/131595167/cshell.rar.html
Replace the cshell.dll in your \Might and Magic IX\data\ directory.

I did notice saving your game takes longer (and autosave when moving from area to area)with this patch but I'm sure people would rather have that than the long constant wait times. If I can find some time I'll see if I can patch it better.

final fix 07/31/2008, 08:24:37
|
frognik writes:
I took a better look at what was happening in cshell.dll and found out that it uses DirectX 7 to capture images like those in the load/save screen. DirectX 9 or above works differently and has to "emulate" DirectX 7 functions, this is why its slow. Unfortunately there is no easy fix for this. Here's my final cshell.dll (load/save time has been fixed):
http://rapidshare.com/files/133809664/cshell.rar.html Basically anything to do with capturing images has been removed and hence you will only see a black image in the load/save screen and simmilar. This is graphical only and wont ruin gameplay.

IIRC, MM9 has a screenshot function. Will this still work? I'm guessing not. Also, not everyone experiences this problem. Is that because this problem only manifests with certain video drivers?

The ss function wouldn't work because it doesnt resize images.
The slowness problem exists for everyone however native directx 7 gfx cards and their drivers will run faster than native directx 9/10 gfx cards emulating directx 7.I'd be interested to know which DX9 and DX10 gfx cards run this game without problems and which drivers are being used.

The last driver that works without delay is 30.82
I run with 81.98 normally and switch to 30.82 for MM9.
With this I almost never crash, have no delays or video anomalies, and can even Alt-Tab between windows to run other applications.

There *is* a visul quirk - 07/27/2008, 01:59:13
|
Shero writes:
- and while it doesn't get in the way of the game at all, I thought it should get at least an honourable-mention In the 'load game' window, where a screenshot of the saved game you want to load is displayed, there is now a duplicate shot of the entire load-game window, with the screenshot of your actual saved game in the upper rt corner behind a message window - which of course is too small to actually read. Games saved in this window prior to installing the patch, are not affected. I could email my sceenshot, but I'm guessing you'll have it as well, and just haven't noticed. Again - it makes *no difference* to gameplay, and I'm over the moon with the new 'no waiting' feature so good job! Quirk on!

All the screenshots used to 'set' the beacon after installing the patch turn into solid colours - again, no big deal - I can tell at a glance that the all green square will rock up to the dragon and the all blue will lob into Arslegard. The proggie is probably selecting a dominant colour, is all.The word 'Visual' in the previous topic lost an 'a'. Bloody Imps.
