This doesn't sound as though the game is failing. It was designed to run at 800x600. I'm thinking that your display drivers are having a problem rendering the old code. There are three ways you might fix that. First, check for newer drivers. The problem (if there is one) might have been fixed. Second, change your screen's resolution to 800x600 or some other 4:3 aspect ratio -- at least while you're playing the game. Third (my favorite), plug in an old CRT as a second monitor.
