You didn't need to apply the 1.3 -> 1.3a patch. The original 1.3 patch was only available for a few hours before the 1.3a patch replaced it. If you downloaded the 1.3 patch after the first day then you have the 1.3a files already. That makes it sound as though your problem is due to something else -- which is no surprise considering that you're using a much later OS. Have you tried running the game in any of the compatibility modes?
