The only way that you can guarantee not to lose any artifacts is not to enter any area containing a black chest until you are sure you can open it without getting your party killed. It's a bit like MM8. There, as soon as you enter the dragon cave in Garrotte Gorge, the clock starts to count down towards the next respawn, and if you don't collect the goodies scattered on the floor of the innermost cave, you lose them. If you want to collect Ithilgore early, as I usually do, it's close to impossible to survive a journey to the inner cave before the place respawns.
