The display using a hex editor normally consists of 3 blocks. The left block gives the position in the file of the hex numbers in the centre block. The block on the right shows the character equivalents (letters, decimal numbers, whatever) of the hex numbers - if there are any equivalents, that is - and it's in this block that you need to look for your player-characters' names. They will be virtually the only the intelligible text there. Just start at the top, and scroll down until you find them.
