I was going to create one paladin and one gladiator but if rangers and paladins are underpowered, maybe I should go for a gladiator and an assassin?

For the two mages, I thought I'd take dark magic for one and light for the other. I figured a druid or priest for one and mage or lich for the other. But I don't know which is best.
