You do have to survive while you're learning your trade, and this means getting you combat skills up. Also, remember that getting Learning up to GM advances your Lich and Mage enormously, which is going to cost you a lot more in training fees if you take full advantage of it. You'll almost certainly need the services of the banker.  But yes, pushing Learning up is a priority for your mage and/or lich. Just don't make it an overriding priority.
