I've tried it occasionally, and I don't remember ID Monster working properly in any of the MM6-9 games. The only thing that ever worked well for me was possessing the Horn of Ros in MM6. The most recent time was in MM8, when I got Ithilgore up to master in ID Monster, but it still didn't tell me anything worth knowing.
