No one's proposed a clear-cut explanation as to what causes it, though. Sometimes it seems to be caused by not enough free RAM -- usually too many programs in the background. Try turning off everything you can before playing.

It might be that MM9's memory management is being sabotaged by a particular program -- anti-virus or firewall programs seem likely candidates. Let us know if you find a smoking gun.

It's possible (but unlikely) that you're running out of disk space. Check that out also.
