...you made an error in selecting your candidate for promotion. This is a big flaw in the game. The dialogue is very easy to get wrong, and you only get one chance at any single promotion, no matter which version of the game you have. I've played the game a number of times, and I still get the dialogue wrong on occasions. You can correct it by using a hex editor, but I don't know precisely how. Try searching (Ctrl-F) the back pages of this tavern for promo. If that doesn't work, I think (but I'm not certain) that the post explaining how to do it was by kkc. Try searching for his posts.
