Part of the mismatch at higher levels might be due to poor player choices made during the leveling process. From what I understand, the game would be completely unforgiving in the way it adjusts, so you're SOL if you don't make the best character development choices.

The game also has the potential for many strategy choices in each encounter. I expect these difficult battles require the simultaneous use of different strategies and styles of combat.
