They quite deliberately programmed that bypass into the Dungeon of Secrets to allow those of us whose hand/eye co-ordination and reflexes might not be quite as good as they were to get past it (pun fully intended ). We had at least two of the programmers/designers posting in these Taverns shortly after 3do folded. Timbecile & KKC, good luck, wherever you are.
