on the bottom of each screen (spells, stats, skills) there is a drop down where you can select which character you want to work with. Next to that is where you set it to unlimited HP or SP if you want. The spells screen lets you choose which spells from which magic schools that character knows, the skills screen lets you actually select the schools of magic, as well as all other skills (and at what levels, both numerically and if you are a novice, expert, master, or GM), and the stats screen lets you change six stats (might, magic, endurance, accuracy, speed, and luck, as well as experience, level, skill points, current HP and SP, and gold. Make sure that before exiting you hit the "update" button. By the sounds of it you might not have the game running when you are trying to use the program. This is the one major difference I have found from my other editors I use - The game must be running in the background, with a save loaded, in order for you to make any changes. If you aren't sure if you've got it right, just check the status message under the character selection box. It will tell you "Might and Magic IX is not running..."; "Might and Magic IX is runnning but a save is not loaded..."; things like that.
