If you're referring to the building where you start off, I didn't even know you could!

Make your way down to the dock, and take the boat out to the Isle of Ashes. Explore a bit, try not to let the sea monster eat you, and get your first quest from Yrsa the troll. Then you do that, and when you do the next quest, you can then take ship to Sturmford. That's when things really start... *evil grin*
