In my last run I had assassin, lich, druid and ranger when I killed the dragon, the most advanced monster in the game. Pressing "G" key with active assassin (Master ID Monster) showed me monster's name and actual hitpoints; only checking with Ranger also explained what magical attacks (column of fire and paralyse) I can suspect from the dragon. IMHO, ID Monster skill in MM9 is as it was in MM6-8 - pretty useless, and it is worth spending some skillpoints only if you have Ranger. Even in this case, when you have those skillpoints, you do not need to improve your skill. The only monster I ever wanted to know how many hitpoints remains, were dragon. For that purpose mastery (27 skillpoints required) is enough; no need to spent 54 skillpoints, required for GM. Even expert with +5 skill ring can do that.
