Original Message: Wiz8 not quite the only Turn Based Engine... |

There is the entire series of AD&D Goldbox games which are made entirely up of a turn based system. Planning combat in these games was wonderful and I have many nostalgic memories spent within them, particularly on the C64.
Curse of the Azure Bonds was probably my first cRPG in fact! And I've been playing them ever since.
The entire series is thus as follows: Pool of Radiance Curse of the Azure Bonds Secret of the Silver Blades Pools of Darkness Plus the dragonlance series: Champions of Krynn Deathknights of Krynn Dark Queen of Kynn And the Savage Frontier pair: Gateway to the Savage Frontier Treasures of the Savage Frontier Fans of this series are also probably well aware that you can obtain a software package entitled "Unlimited Adventures", where you can custom make your own adventures using this engine. In terms of modernising this style of gameplay, Ubisoft tried and failed dismally with an attempted reworking of Pool of Radiance: The ruins of Myth Drannor. The game was hollow, buggy with a horribly unintuitive interface. Atari/Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil needs to be mentioned also since it is turn based, but I have not yet managed to get my grubby mits on it. So perhaps Wizardry 8 is one of the few first person turn based engines, but it is definitely not alone historically speaking in featuring turn based combat. Cheers, CerebroDragon |
