LOL - indeed it was as I suspected, I'd missed the gloriously obvious. A nice little tunnel just a little eastways from where I'd been previously looking. So goodbye paranoia for the moment at least. Tally-ho to Crusader-hood! 
Can't say the map really helped me establish where I'd been before however, as it would have done in MM6-8...Speaking of MM6, I felt Nicolai's appearance in Drangheim was a little silly...he doesn't really stand out from the crowd that much. Although his quest could still be fun, haven't done it yet... Just a couple more questions, since I've only really just started the game. (one crusader at level 11, one level 10 fighter and two level 11 initiates) Is it possible to complete the game with very little in the way of promotions? I wonder how many have done it with only fighters and initiates? I have contemplated leaving one of my initiates either as a scholar or a healer for instance when they are promoted. What average level should one approximately be when the first main quest of uniting the jarl factions be complete? Heading to my next town soon, which will probably be Guberland...
