Of course, it doesn't explain why it happened. Your ART and SCRIPTS rezzes might be corrupt, but it's more likely that WinXP is mucking things up. Applying the patch in Safe Mode would be a good next step, but you're almost done with the game and the effort wouldn't be worth it.
