I had already downloaded the patched and they didn't help. I uninstalled MM9, then went into "safe mode". I couldn't access my CD drive in safe mode, so I went back to normal mode. I reinstalled MM9 and it worked. I have no idea why, but it now thinks that I have got DirectX 8.1 instead of DirectX 9. I'm using Windows 98, so maybe it's just eccentric. Thanks for your help.
