to check this just look and see if the name of the weapon is showing up in red letters. Green means unidentified, and you can't equip anything until it is either identified or repaired. Black letters mean it is fine. The sucky part is that it takes so long to build up a half-decent repair skill (and things break so easily in the beginning) that you can easily spend all of your life savings fixing up your weapons and armor.
