For me, it almost never happens. For others, it happens about once an hour. The F5 key quicksave is your friend. Get used to using it often like before you open any new door or leave an area. This will make sure that you never have to repeat anything. There are times that the game will crash almost repeatedly while trying to "switch" video modes like performing an ID monster on the dragon, talking to the Oord boy or the shopkeeper who gives him a job. It's best to make very likeral use of the Quicksave feature.
