I have returned from the desert sands

It has been a VERY long time since I've been on here ...

    Hopefully I'm not considered spam

I finally decided to give Might and Magic X Legacy a try, and the first place I went to was here to see if there was a Tavern built. Sadly, there is none, but Peter2 had a link to reviews that I read. Then I decided to find a let's play video and I fell in love.

I am past Act 1 now, but when I found a lore book talking about Lord Canegam I knew they were going to get this game right. The turn based RPG style reminds me of MM3-4, but the graphics remind me of MM8. I can't wait to get back home from work and play it again!

I am excited to return to the tavern to share drinks with Bones, Chlala, and Peter2 if they are still here!

The self-proclaimed expert of Might and Magic 8 is back.

P.S. any plans on a MMX tavern?

Good to see you again! Opinions seem to differ about MMX. Ossie (see MM6 Tavern) was definitely underwhelmed, finding some game-killing bugs and suffering increased spam and phishing, but I gather you like it.

I took a look at Ossie's complaints

I haven't come across any of the bugs he was referring to. I use Windows 8 on this PC and it seems to be ok. I play it at max graphics, which by the way are AMAZING!!! The load times between areas seems to drag a little bit but that is about it.

There are SO many comparisons to World of Xeen its ridiculous. The gameplay, the grid system, the turn based combat, the world map, the dungeons, heck even wandering just a bit too far and finding an enemy that is WAY too powerful.

There are obvious connections to older Might and Magic games. In fact one of the spanning quests is a DIRECT link to Might and Magic 8 in a sense. Some of the lore books you find describes the older games too.

I'm maybe halfway through the game, currently doing a promotion quest for my orc. Its thoroughly challenging and I highly recommend quicksaving often.

The Ubisoft thing can be annoying, but after getting used to Steam, Origin, and now this, it isn't that bad. You can turn off the emails and whatnot during the installation of Uplay, so I don't really get a lot of spam. It runs in the background and other than the "achievements" you can get I don't really know its there. If you have a weaker computer I wouldn't suggest it without upgrades.

Overall my experience thusfar has been over the top. When I find myself thinking about the game all day at work that's when I know I've found a good one.

    BTW, sorry for the novel

You have made me put this one back on the list of games to get around to soon. I want to check out a couple of lets plays to make sure it is not one of those games that make me dizzy.

Inner ear damage makes some games I wish I could play out of my reach.

Still torn

    Ossie writes:

I know what you mean about wanting to get home & play. There are elements of that with MMX. And nobody wants the Tavern community to enjoy the latest MM title more than me, meaning we all get more games in future. But I think that overall people should be in a position to make an informed decision, so in fairness.....

If the game worked as intended, it would be a solid effort for a developer new to MM, with good prospects of future titles. And one day, once there have been a couple of patches to eliminate the current problems, it will probably be looked back on as such. But, in the words of Aragorn, it is not this day.

I can see for people who were lucky enough to navigate their way through the game in the exact linear order they were lead, and didn't strike any issues, they would rate it much more highly. But I grew up from MM2 with being able to go anywhere & do anything, and if you were fool enough to stick your head in somewhere you didn't belong yet, you quickly learned! With MMX, that will ruin your entire game, along with 50+ hours of play, as pretty much ever quest seems to have an issue with doing something before you are told. At best, we were unpaid beta testers for this title which was released prematurely with way too many issues. Hence, those of us who got the game first struck problems that others were pre-warned to avoid. You would think that a publisher would want to reward its most loyal customers, not punish them.

So by all means, once the 2nd or 3rd patch is out, go buy the game and I think you will enjoy it. The graphics are pretty nice, and there are elements of the story that will have fans of the series smiling to themselves. But until then, it's an incomplete title that will fry your GPU and waste your time discovering problems that should have been amended before release.

It's also small - about as large as MM8 before you start visiting the elemental nodes - maybe smaller. So, unlike with previous titles where you got to max out all your main skills & still have enough to ensure your spellcasters also maxed out their weapons & armour, this game is over before any of your characters have even maxed their two or three main skills. Which doesn't do much for replayability.

All of which leads to my final comment that, personally, there are no circumstances under which I will ever spend money on anything released by Ubisoft ever again - their useless tech "support", insistence on forcing the Uplay client on customers and rushed release of this title have irreversibly turned me off them. I know some people say that in frustration, but I mean it. How I will reconcile this with the desire to play future MM titles (if any are ever released) will remain to be seen. But in any event, I won't even bother looking at another Ubifail title until months after the initial release.

hmmmm...

Are there any patches out now?

This game resembles MM4 SO much that it could possibly be considered a remake with new graphics and story from an uneducated (not a fanatic) point of view.

I chose to play it differently than you I think. I finished Act 2, then I explored the ENTIRE world and even completed the obelisk quests before even trying to enter Karthal. By the time I got into Karthal I was level 24 and eating Black Guards for lunch. I suggest oregano with the Black Guards btw. It brings out the best flavors.

Anyway, I just freed Falagar (which is another reference to MM6) and about to dive back into the game. My biggest complaint so far is that it seems the text was never checked for quality. It costs -1 gold to take a horse to Seahaven? That's not right. I have also found about two or three repeated words. That's my biggest gripe so far, and that's not much to gripe about.

To be fair, I have a beast of a gaming computer. This thing was built to play Skyrim high graphic detail mods at Ultra settings, and Battlefield 3 will barely make this thing sweat. For the average person, this game would probably test their computer's limits.I like that though, because it means they understand the importance of graphics. It is by FAR the best looking MM game. The colors and detail are beautiful.

I'm gonna have to start a book series with all this talking I'm doing.

Enjoying the discussion & happy to dissect it as much as you want. And as I say, I'm delighted if others were lucky enough not to be the beta tester for xyz bug - the more people buy the game, the more chance we will have more of them.

I'm just recommending people avoid until it's fit for sale. Not yet......

Just completed MMX

    Dunerider The War Troll writes:

I will say that they definitely got the spirit of the series back into this one. I highly recommend at least trying to play it. Yes, it requires Uplay, but I didn't really find it all that bad. Yes it has a few bugs, but I came across nothing that made the game impossible to finish. DO NOT focus on the storyline. This game is designed so you MUST do side quests to get experience to do the main quest. The difficulty jumps are massive from act to act.

I'm relatively sure I've completed every quest and explored every crevasse. Any questions let me know.

MMX Questions
02/25/2014, 14:02:38

    EagleScout writes:

I have not started MMX yet as I am finishing up Heroes of Might & Magic VI first. That said, I am used to the issues with UPLAY and Ubisoft. I am also going through Steam. Took me a while to get used to them, but now they are not so bad. At least UPLAY allows me to upgrade items for my HOMM VI heroes.

I to have an upgraded gaming machine that will let me play Skyrim at high graphics level so the machine should not be an issue. My question is the operating system. I am running Windows Professional 7. I have read that issues occur with anything under Windows 8. Is this so? Do I need to upgrade before MMX or do you think they will put out a patch? I am waiting before getting MMX to make sure most of the patches are in.

Windows does not seem to be an issue

    Ossie writes:

Most of the serious bugs - can't-complete-mainline-quest-so-my-entire-game-is-now-wasted bugs - have nothing to do with Windows version.

I would still wait. The first patch is out & seems to have addressed some of the smaller issues that were identified early, but none of the important ones: mainline quests, GPU temperature etc (doesn't matter what else your rig can handle, MMX will fry it - and it has nothing to do with the quality or otherwise of the graphics).

Gorge yourself on Heroes VI then saunter in after a couple of patches & enjoy what we should have got from the start.

MM X Windows Version
02/26/2014, 14:03:00

    EagleScout writes:

Sounds like a great idea. I have finished HOMM VI main campaign along with the Pirate one and now doing Dance Macabre. Still have a ways to go. I waited on HOMM VI until all the patches were out so waiting on MM X will not be too hard.

I hope MM X is up to standard of the rest. I started at MM VI and went through MM IX including the mods. I can't recall how many times I have played each. I have gone through the HOMM I - V and now on VI. BTW, I thought HOMM IV was Great. It had a better RPG feel to it. I had a 7 heroes army only and pretty much wiped the maps with them (customized them). I tried MM I thru MM IV (after MM VI), but could not get into them. I did all of the Bard's Tales so they had a somewhat similar feel.
