help with mm8che
11/05/2011, 04:35:52

    Greebz writes:

Hello I tried searching for this problem back 30999 days ago and nothing popped up.

I recently decided to give Might and Magic 8 another try after a couple years, having just finished 6 and Knights of the old republic. I wanted to make a full party of level 1s all of my choosing. So I downloaded mm8che since I remember it working so well. However now it cannot seem to recognize my saved game files (.dod)

Is there some type of format I need to change these over to? I already tried running the editor as administrator. Does it need to be run in compatibility mode? (I have win 7 64-bit)

Any other ideas for a fix? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    -Greebz

Assuming the normal installation this is what should appear under path when you open the editor:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\3DO\Might and Magic VIII\

I do point it to the correct place

I point mm8che to the directory with the saved game files, save001.dod save002.dod etc.

It does not however show any of these saved files in the load section of the editor.

I've not used this myself, but I think I remember seeing something about it.

I believe that there's an error somewhere in the program. I think it looks either in the MM7 directory or the MM9 directory or something instead of the MM8 one. I'm told it's easy to correct and once done, the program works very well, but like I say, I've not used it myself s I can't help further.

Solution

Sorry to necro, but I ran into this issue.

Solution - Where it shows the path to the saved files above the saved games list, change VII to VIII.

I had tried using the Browse button and pointing it to the right folder, but that didn't work. The solution above did.

mm8che

Maybe this could help; a post from 2004:

    Rustavius writes:
The program defaults to the might and magic 7 folder, but it's in Roman numerals. If you look carefully, you see the roman numeral VII at the very end of the path, which is the roman number "7". If you add on more "I" to make the number "*" instead of "7" it will recognize your saves.

mm8che works

You are absolutely correct! If you open the mm8che editor and look in the path field -- type in one more roman numeral "I" to make it read "VIII" at the very end, your saved games will immediately appear. Thank you for revealing this simple "bug."

It turns out also that I needed to open both the mm8che editor AND the game as the "administrator" and give permission to run both. To do this right click on the respective icons. Of course, you must be the administrator of the computer you're using. (But I forget how this is done -- I just know I set it up when I first bought the computer.)

Can't find save files

mme8che can't find any and Cortina can't find any either.
The path is correct, VIII, not VII and all execs are run as admin.

    Mitch writes:

I uninstalled the game and then installed it and now both Cortina and mm8che can see it.

This is very confusing since I could bring up MM8 and load files.
Must be a Winblows 10 feature?

solution

    Greebz writes:

I figured out a solution and decided I should post it in case anyone else ends up having this problem. I put the mm8che file in the might and magic 8 directory. When I did this and then launched it, it could see the save files.

Hope this helps anyone else who has this problem, and thanks to everyone who tried to help.
