OT, and with tongue firmly in cheek

    Dearest friends,
Papa Elf and I continue to improve. However, Ol' Stormy, my computer, has other ideas. It locks up for no reason except that it's using Windows7 -- what can I say? (Arch villain William Setag was well-named, IMHO.) It hates its own mouse, which periodically locks up. It will go along quite happily, sleeping when required, then go into a spate of insomnia, sleeping only when forced. Having gone through these same symptoms with one of our daughters many years ago, Papa Elf and I are faced with the inevitable conclusion: my computer has bipolar disorder.
D'ya think lithium batteries in the mouse would help?
    Love,
    Elf

That's a perfect example of the good news and bad news departments.

But the good news considerably outweighs the bad. Delighted to hear that you're both getting better!

Re. the computer - I don't know for sure. All my connections are wired (some of my clients are wary of wireless connections). It's a nuisance in some ways, but there's less to go wrong. But software does corrupt on occasions, and I've found a really cold boot can help - I had to do it regularly with our previous cordless 'phone, and it's corrected a cache fault on my box a couple of times. Try switching the computer off, unplugging it, and holding the power switch in until the chips discharge (~ 10 sec.), and at the same time, taking the batteries out of your mouse (~ 1 min. this time). Then put everything back together and see how it goes.

    Good luck, HTH!

Some things to check on computer

Event Viewer may be capturing what's happening. To get to Event Viewer, just use eventvwr.msc from the Windows 7 search. It's possible that the mouse drivers are not compatible with Windows 7(hard to say without knowing exactly what mouse it is).
