I'm not very computer literate, so I'm not sure of the specifics of my computer (that and I'm not on my home computer), but I do have Windows XP and DirectX 9. I'm not sure what 3D card I have, but 3D acceleration mode does work (but not for MM7) and I am quite sure my speakers/sound card(?) completely suck and don't support 3D sound. The problem that you described sounds like what happens when I attempt to run MM7 in 3D accelerated mode; I click on the shortcut, the screen blinks, and I'm back to my desktop (MM7 runs fine in software mode with my DirectX driver turned down one notch). Oh yeah, I don't have MM8 set to run in any compatibility modes. I'm sorry I'm not much help but I'll reply again in a couple of hours with the specifics about my computer and make sure that MM8 runs fine (I only recently reinstalled it the other day and haven't bothered to play).
