IIRC, you'll be replacing 2 files in your MM8 folder -- smacker.exe and bink.exe. First move the originals to their own folder for safekeeping. Then copy the final versions to the MM8 folder (or wherever it was the originals were). MM8 was designed to run under Win98, although I never had problems using WinXP. It was also designed to run at 640x480. Use those two settings. Disabling visual themes and desktop composition might be helpful depending on how you've configured your desktop.
