3DO changed the magic system for that game; fire, water, earth, and air were gathered together into Elemental Magic, and body, mind and spirit were gathered together in Spirit Magic. The spellcasters had different levels of access to Elemental, Spirit, Light and Dark, so a priest could GM Light magic but only have access to Dark magic at expert level, and it was vice versa for a Lich. The only game in which a character had full access to Light and Dark magics was MM6.
