...if you hire a scholar, he/she will ID that (and anything else that is found) and give you a 5% experience bonus as well. I always thought that this was one of the best bargains going among the NPCs. You get the XP bonus, you don't have to waste any skill points training one of your characters up in ID Item, and you don't have to transfer any item that needs identification into the backpack of the character trained in the skill.
