Even back in the late 1990's, when the game was being played on machines using the chips it had been designed for, hardware acceleration was not problem-free. On the machine I had then, hardware acceleration allowed me to distinguish between monsters of the same class which all looked the same under software acceleration, but it made the game very much more likely to crash. Sometimes the crash froze the computer to the point at which the only way out was to pull the plug, and that usually left lost clusters on the disk, necessitating the use of Scandisk to find and get rid of them.
