A fan of the M&M series called Grayface has created an unofficial patches for MM6 and MM7 (using another unofficial patch by Mok as the basis). It solves some issues and adds a bunch of features. I don't know whether it will solve your problem but I believe it's worth a shot. I will include in the message a link to the MM7 patch. You will find MM6 patch from that same forum, if you should ever experience some problems with MM6 as well. As for MM8, I don't know.
