Original Message:   It's probably a rendering glitch.
I've had that problem with dragons in "Might and Magic 8" too. Sometimes when you're *too* close, the game doesn't target them anymore: It assumes you're shooting at something behind them; hence the arrows.

There are two ways to fix this that I know of: Back off a little bit (but stay within melee range). Or turn off hardware graphics acceleration.

The post in the link below describes some of the practical differences between hardware and software graphics acceleration. If you want to switch, change the value of the "Use D3D" key in the registry from "1" to "0". (Does anyone know whether you can change it using the installation program instead?)

My MM7 registry location (yours may vary):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\New World Computing\Might and Magic VII\1.0

I don't advise editing the registry if you can't fix what you break.
