I have learnt it the hard way. Preservation does not help against instant death attacks of any kind. It helps only if you lose HP - and you do not lose HP in fact when the instant death attack succeeds. You get dead.
Preservation is good against Meteor Showers and similar area effect spells (an unconscious character can be hit by these spells), it is good against monters targeting more than one character at once, it is good against monsters with strong attack. It is not good against Minotaur Lords, the well in the Lands of Giants or against "lava pools" (Mount Nighon and others).
